Costa Maya has been labeled the next big hotspot for ecotourism in Mexico. This attention from the media and tourists has created a great opportunity for real estate investors. Because development is in beginning stages, many investment gurus believe the time to buy is now. Coast Maya is a 57-mile stretch of coastline located in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula between Cancun and Belize. Costa Maya is home to an abundance of natural attractions, including a breeding ground for giant sea turtles, and is currently the last undeveloped stretch of Caribbean costal property.
Mexico ’s plan is to develop Costa Maya and the southern part of Quintana Roo by small ecological-based tourism. Ecotourism, which focuses on local cultures, wilderness adventures, and personal growth activities, is important to this area due to Costa Maya’s impressive natural ecosystems and federally protected reserves. Other attractions include historic Mayan ruins, the spectacular Mesoamerican Reef (a favorite spot for snorkelers and scuba divers), a monkey reserve and the unspoiled jungles surrounding the small communities of Costa Maya.
Fidecaribe , Mexico ’s State Tourism Agency, and Fonatur, the National Trust Fund for Tourism Develop, guide the development plans for this area. Fonatur plans to invest more than $35,000,000 USD over a 17 year period. The Mexican government has invested millions more into infrastructure, marinas, airports, electricity and fiber optics in the southern part of Quintana Roo.
The most alluring draw to Costa Maya is its affordable beachfront property. Already, land is going fast. Hotel developers have snapped
up large parcels and are beginning construction. According to Caribbean Trust Real Estate, an international realty company specializing in Caribbean real estate, the price of real estate has already doubled over the last few years, making it possible for some real estate investors to see earnings 5 to 10 times their investment during their lifetime.
Majahual and Xcalak are two of the most popular towns in Costa Maya.
To reach Costa Maya, many tourists drive the four hour trek from Cancun; however, direct flights from Cancun to Majahual are available. Xcalak’s airstrip has been enlarged to accommodate small planes or tourists can fly into the Mexican town of Chetumal about 75 miles south of Costa Maya and rent a car.
